Dua Lipa: ‘My music is taking a new direction’

Dua Lipa will be addressing a new chapter of her personal life on her new album.
The British singer burst onto the music scene in 2017 with a number of top 10 anthems like Be the One and New Rules from her debut album and has been heralded for its honest lyrics and themes of female empowerment.
Now, as she gears up to release her second album next year (19), she’s warned fans to expect something a little different as she tackles a new chapter in her personal life.
“It has some throwback elements, which I’m excited about ’cause it’s a new direction for me and I’m looking forward to it,” the 22-year-old singer told Rolling Stone, adding that the material has been influenced by Prince, Outkast and Gnarls Barkley. “It has to kind of be a new chapter in my life. I want the art to be subjective.”
Dua’s relationship status could have something to do with her new musical direction. The One Kiss hitmaker admitted to British newspaper Metro in February that she had drawn on a number of ex-boyfriends for inspiration for her first album, which included a seven-month romance with LANY lead singer Paul Klein.
While she’s now happily coupled up with British model and chef Isaac Carew after rekindling their 2015 relationship, the songstress is certain her fans will love the new music as much as the last.
“Another thing about being in the public eye: a lot of people have speculations – who’s this song about? Or what’s this about? – and of course I’m not going to stop being honest about my music, regardless of the amount of attention the first album’s had, and I guess I have had in a way,” she shared. “It’s just they’re all songs that leave enough room for subjection, that you can take the song and make it your own and it doesn’t necessarily have the same meaning for you as it does for me.”
